Penn State Beaver hires new IST faculty member

MONACA, Pa. — He’s been a computer programming instructor, a business journalist for the “Wall Street Journal of India” and the director of data analytics for one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Now Ashu Kumar will bring the practical and the pedagogical together at Penn State Beaver, where he’s been hired to teach in the information sciences and technology program.

He starts fall 2016.

Kumar joined the Beaver campus as an adjunct instructor in 2014 and immediately felt at ease in the classroom.

“After teaching for three hours I’d feel really refreshed,” Kumar said. “And teaching will give me the time I want to spend on big data and data science research.”

Kumar has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Rohilkhand University and a master of business administration degree from the Center for Management Development, both in India.

He began his career as a business journalist, covering economics, industry and technology for the Economic Times and serving as a bureau chief for the Financial Express. After earning his graduate degree, he moved to the United States and began his second career in information technology, managing analytics and big data for SAP America and Mylan Pharmaceuticals.

Kumar’s time at Penn State is not his only stint in the classroom. He spent a year teaching undergraduate computer programming and graduate information technology courses in New Delhi. He also has an extensive background in technology training and has been a featured speaker at national technology conferences.

Kumar will continue his involvement in corporate research and consulting projects in order to keep updated on the latest industry trends.
