Penn State Beaver biology professor Cassandra Miller-Butterworth has long been concerned with the plight of the little brown bat. Now, through her work with fellow professors and students, she's bringing the fight to the community.

Make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a 'day on'

In 2007, Penn State Beaver’s student affairs staff invited students from six regional Penn State campuses to Beaver County on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea was to harness the power of Penn State, volunteering at numerous sites in the area and making a big impact on a small community. The Penn State Regional MLK Day of Service event is now in its eighth year and rotates between seven campuses — Beaver, Altoona, Behrend, DuBois, Fayette, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington.

Beaver SGA to raise homelessness awareness

Beginning April 16, about 20 Penn State Beaver students will build a city of cardboard boxes in downtown Beaver and live there for 48 hours, sleeping on the ground and begging for money, all in the name of homelessness awareness. All proceeds will benefit area homeless shelters.

Beaver psychology major Maura Francis will be the first in her family to graduate from college and the first to go on to graduate school. She plans to use her childhood struggles as a launching pad for her future.
