Stephanie Cabarcas-Petroski, Ph.D., associate teaching professor of Biology, teaches molecular biology and human genetics, human physiology, and cancer biology courses.

Students in her classes can engage in protein and DNA isolation, molecular experience, physiology labs, respiratory analysis and web lab research involving hands-on experimentation using physical materials, especially liquids, chemicals and biology samples. Students learn how to apply basic course content to current day research findings by using various resources such as scientific journals, science podcasts, and documentaries. Her students also work with software designed to record physiological states under various conditions.

Dr. Cabarcas-Petroski’s classes prepare students for a variety of career options including:

  • Working in healthcare fields as lab technicians and pharmaceutical sales representative
  • Pursuing advanced degrees in professional health areas including medical school, physician assistant school, dental school and pharmacy school

Dr. Petroski’s research focuses on:

  • Cancer biology
  • Molecular biology
  • Cancer stem cells
  • Pancreatic cancer

She uses bioinformatics to analyze clinical datasets derived from cancer studies to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers associated with RNA polymerase III transcription and cancer stem cell populations. This research can help to improve cancer diagnosis and treatments as well as improve patient prognosis.
