Michael Baker Building, Room 119

Richard Lomotey, Ph.D., associate professor of Information Sciences and Technology, teaches information technology, cybersecurity, and computer science courses on object-oriented design and software applications, network security, computer and cyber forensics, systems programming, elementary mathematical statistics, and database management and administration.

With a focus on classroom learning with community impact, Dr. Lomotey empowers students to harness technology for the greater good, supports regional health and agricultural projects, and promotes innovations that matter — locally and globally. His curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, with practical examples that involve building, deploying, and managing distributed systems. Students engage in projects that simulate real-world scenarios, such as developing fault-tolerant applications, implementing mobile distributed applications, and optimizing performance. Students gain practical experience with industry-standard tools and frameworks and various cloud platforms, by working through coding challenges, debugging distributed applications, and analyzing performance metrics to understand the intricacies of distributed systems firsthand.

Each semester Dr. Lomotey collaborates with a small group of students on research, often resulting in students attending and even presenting at national conferences, and having their work published in leading journals. This research allows students to translate academic knowledge into solving real world problems. This further prepares or positions the students better for the competitive technology job market.

Dr. Lomotey’s classes prepare students for careers including:

  • Software developer/engineer
  • Data engineer
  • Data scientist
  • DevOps engineer
  • Web developer
  • Mobile app developer
  • Database administrator
  • Cybersecurity analyst
  • Mobile cloud computing
  • Enterprise applications
  • Cyber physical devices or Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Web services
  • Databases (RDBMs and NoSQL)
  • Topics including cocoa farmers, lactation, hemophilia
