Can I participate in sports on campus?
Yes! International students are welcome to join campus athletics. We offer varsity (intercollegiate) teams and intramural sports. Visit our Athletic Department website to learn more.
What kind of housing is available?
Harmony Hall, a traditional-style residence hall, is located on campus and houses up to 210 students. Learn more at our Housing & Food Services page.
What is there to do on campus?
The Office of Student Activities hosts a variety of events year-round. Students can join clubs, organizations, intramural and varsity sports.
We're also located near Pittsburgh, offering even more entertainment, culture, and sports opportunities.
Can I buy what I need near campus?
Yes! There are many shopping areas nearby, and shuttles are available to help with transportation to:
Stores
Restaurants
Entertainment spots
Staff are available to assist you in purchasing any essentials you may need upon arrival.
What is the weather like?
Southwestern Pennsylvania experiences all four seasons. You should bring:
Cold weather gear: coat, hat, gloves, scarf
Rain gear: umbrella, waterproof coat
Professional clothing: for interviews or special events
Be prepared for a mix of snow, rain, sun, humidity, and dry or cool air.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes. Health insurance is mandatory for all international students on F-1 or J-1 visas. Visit University Health Services for more information.
The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP for Penn State) charge will appear on your bill in LionPATH.
You have one week to submit a waiver if you have comparable coverage.
What immunizations do I need to receive?
You must provide proof of the following immunizations:
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
Meningococcal Vaccine (Menveo or Menactra) — for students living on campus

Can I work while attending classes?
F-1 and J-1 students are eligible for limited on-campus employment with restrictions:
Complete employment paperwork with ISSA
Obtain a Social Security Number if hired

Do I need a Social Security number?
Only if you are hired for on-campus work. It is not required otherwise.

How do I get a driver’s license?
To drive in the U.S., you need a Pennsylvania driver’s license.
