In 2007, Penn State Beaver’s student affairs staff invited students from six regional Penn State campuses to Beaver County on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea was to harness the power of Penn State, volunteering at numerous sites in the area and making a big impact on a small community. The Penn State Regional MLK Day of Service event is now in its eighth year and rotates between seven campuses — Beaver, Altoona, Behrend, DuBois, Fayette, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington.
Beginning April 16, about 20 Penn State Beaver students will build a city of cardboard boxes in downtown Beaver and live there for 48 hours, sleeping on the ground and begging for money, all in the name of homelessness awareness. All proceeds will benefit area homeless shelters.
Maura Francis was recently accepted to a prestigious psychology graduate program and plans to use her education to create an intervention program for at-risk kids.

Penn State Beaver baseball defeated Penn State Schuylkill 18-4 on Sunday to claim the Penn State University Athletic Conference championship. Beaver, which came into the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed, squeaked by Penn State Brandywine on Friday and defeated Penn State DuBois and Schuylkill on Saturday before winning the title.
