Students at Penn State Beaver display engine, new research to ANSYS Users Group

Penn State Beaver is getting plenty of mileage out its replica of Henry Ford's first combustion engine.

On April 5 students from the campus demonstrated the engine and presented their continuing research into it at a meeting of the Western Pennsylvania ANSYS Users Group in Southpointe, Pa.

The engine was built in 2012 by sophomore engineering students as a class project for Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics taught by Jim Hendrickson, instructor in engineering.

Penn State Beaver students this spring have expanded the research of their predecessors by performing finite element analysis on the engine to estimate the forces and stresses developed in some of the principle components of the engine, Henrickson said.

That research, as well as a demonstration of the working engine, was one of four presentations by campus students to the ANSYS group, which is composed of users of the industry-leading software. ANSYS performs finite element analysis to help predict how products will operate in the real world.

The ANSYS group typically invites senior engineering students to present their projects at its spring meeting. This year marked the second in a row that sophomores from Penn State Beaver have been asked to participate. Beaver’s four teams gave nearly half of the presentations of the day.

The engine, which was awarded three blue ribbons when it was displayed at 2012 Maker Faire Detroit at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., is a working replica of Ford’s Kitchen Sink Engine. That engine was never installed in a vehicle. Instead, it served as a proof of concept for his 1896 Quadricycle.

“The story goes that on Christmas Eve 1893 Henry Ford had his wife put down the turkey and come to the kitchen sink to help him start this thing,” Hendrickson said.

The engine was plugged into a light socket, and Ford and his wife regulated the fuel intake by hand. They got it started, and Ford went on to automotive history.

Outstanding Alumni Award recipient speaks to business class

Nick Andrews, recipient of the 2012 Penn State Beaver Outstanding Alumni Award, recently spoke to the Strategic Business Planning class taught by Ed Weaver, lecturer in business. Andrews is founder, president and owner of Andrews Industrial Controls Inc. in Carnegie. He attended Beaver campus before graduating from Penn State's University Park campus with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1977.

His company services the energy industry for product solutions for measurement and controls throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland, including oil and gas, power generation, coal, chemicals, metals, mining, pulp, paper and water quality.

In the class, Andrews spoke about his time as a Beaver student as well as the many friends he made who are now in a variety of leadership positions. He discussed the background of his company’s formation and his time spent in industrial equipment sales. He also provided information about the business plan he developed when he decided to start his own company and gave an overview of the impact that the shale gas industry is going to have on our region as well as the job opportunities it will provide.

One of his main points, however, was the academic challenges he faced and welcomed when he attended Beaver campus. When Andrews received the Outstanding Alumni Award earlier this year, he also focused on this in his acceptance speech.

“Even though I graduated from a very competitive high school at Mount Lebanon (Pittsburgh), I can assure you that scholastically, my peers at Penn State Beaver were every bit as talented and driven,” he said. “Penn State’s curriculum in the business school was solid - a great mix of advanced math, physics, chemistry, biology and all the humanities. I still interview candidates from many other schools and trust me, not many can match this.”

Andrews also served as a member of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and established an annual scholarship to benefit Beaver students. In addition, he serves on the boards of many professional and community organizations. For more information about Andrews, contact the Chancellor’s Office at 724-773-3553.

The public is invited to attend a free screening of the award-winning documentary, “Searching for Angela Shelton,” 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, in the Student Union Building auditorium at Penn State Beaver.

Filmmaker Angela Shelton traveled across the country to survey other women with the same name and discovered that 24 out of 40 women had been sexually abused.

On her journey, Shelton meets an Angela Shelton who tracks sexual predators and lives in the same town as the filmmaker’s father, who sexually abused her and her siblings for years. The survey of women becomes a journey of self-discovery during which Shelton decides to confront her own past and her abusive father on Father’s Day. The film includes the women’s discussions of forgiveness, faith, and the power of the human spirit.

“Searching for Angela Shelton” won numerous awards, including the 2005 Memphis International Film Festival Award for Best Documentary, the 2005 Sonoma Valley Film Festival Audience Award, the 2005 Newport Beach Film Festival Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking Award, and the 2005 Zoie Film Festival Award for Best Documentary.

The program will be presented by the Office of Student Activities in conjunction with the Women’s Center of Beaver County as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. The Women’s Center will also facilitate a post-screening discussion.

Public invited to attend documentary, ‘Anatomy of Hate’

Penn State Beaver invites the public to attend a free screening of the award-winning documentary, “The Anatomy of Hate - A Dialogue to Hope,” 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, in the Student Union Building auditorium. At 7:30 p.m., the film’s director, Mike Ramsdell, will engage the audience in a discussion and question and answer session. The film contains graphic language and is for mature audiences.

For six years, Ramsdell worked with unprecedented access to some of the world’s most extreme, violent ideologies and participants, including the White Supremacy movement, Christian fundamentalism as an anti-gay platform, Muslim extremism, the Palestinian Intifada, Israeli settlers and soldiers, and United States military forces in Iraq.
“The film weaves a tapestry that reveals both the emotional and biological mechanisms which make all of us susceptible to acts and ideologies of hate,” Ramsdell said. “It demonstrates how these very same traits make us equally capable of overcoming them.”

The documentary juxtaposes film footage with interviews from experts in the fields of psychology, neurology, and sociology and intersperses stories of redemption told by former participants in hate ideologies.

“The Anatomy of Hate” was named Best Political Documentary at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival in 2009 and won the Audience Choice Award at the Atlanta DocuFest. The documentary was also an official selection for the Boston International Film Festival, the Cinema City Film Festival, and the Saratoga Fringe Festival.

Beaver Library collection offers 600 African-American autobiographies

The African-American Autobiography Collection, located at Penn State Beaver Library and honoring Russell C. Brignano, professor emeritus of English, contains more than 600 African-American autobiographies. The book titles in the collection represent a variety of professions and experiences. They include "Mirror to America" by renowned scholar and historian John Hope Franklin, the Brooklyn Dodgers' Jackie Robinson's life story in "I Never Had It Made," "Brother Ray: Ray Charles' Own Story" and famous poet Nikki Giovanni's "Sacred Cows and Other Edibles."

The collection can be viewed in The CAT, the online catalog, by using the Advanced Search feature and indicating under "In Library" -- "Penn State Beaver" and under "Location" -- "Beaver-African-American Autobiography." All titles are available for delivery to any Penn State library location via the "I want It" button in The CAT.

Brignano, who is now retired, is a recognized scholar of African-American autobiography. The prime force behind the collection, he helped to develop it and donated many of his own books. In 1990, the Penn State Equal Opportunity Planning Committee gave $5,000 to support book purchase, and the collection continues to grow with acquisitions through the Libraries monograph fund and donor support. The collection enhances awareness of the importance of this literature and allows the campus to offer courses designed to explore African-American contributions to literature, the arts and society.

Brignano, a member of the English Department at Penn State from 1975 to 1996, taught composition and rhetoric, and American and African-American literature and humanities. He also has pursued scholarly research into baseball literature, a personal passion. The author of numerous articles, bibliographies and book reviews, Brignano is the author of two books: "Richard Wright: An Introduction to the Man and His Works" and "Black Americans in Autobiography: An Annotated Bibliography of Autobiographies and Autobiographical Books Written Since the Civil War."

Comedian Moss looks to bring laughs, cultural understanding Feb. 6

Comedian and writer Preacher Moss will present his “End of Racism" comedy tour at 7 p.m. Feb. 6, in the auditorium of Penn State Beaver's Student Union Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Bryant Reginald Moss earned the nickname “Preacher” because of his imitations of the pastor at his family’s church. Raised as a Christian in a Maryland suburb, he attended a local military academy and converted to Islam at age 20.

Moss was the opening act and a writer for comedian Darrell Hammond, a regular on “Saturday Night Live.” He continued to work in Los Angeles as a writer for other comedians, including Damon Wayans and George Lopez, and toured with comedian Dave Chappelle.

In addition, he and several other comedians developed the "Allah Made Me Funny" tour, which they performed throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

Moss’ use of respectful humor leads the audience to think seriously about poverty, racism, multiculturalism, civil rights and critical race theory, and has been hailed as a comedic and social tour de force. At the age of 45, Moss is one of today’s most sought after college performers.

Moss has performed at the Global Peace and Unity Event in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in London and for the Oklahoma Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. He can be seen in an upcoming documentary “The Muslims Are Coming!,” which features a group of Muslim-American comedians touring the United States in an effort to combat misrepresentations of Islam.

The show is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and the Office of Student Affairs. For more information, contact Robin Schreck, coordinator of student activities and residence life, at ras62@psu.edu or 724-773-3947.

Penn State Beaver students enrolled in the Introduction to Public Relations course met United States Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A. when they attended the Second Annual Southwestern Pennsylvania Media and Mental Health Awards ceremony held recently in Pittsburgh.

Benjamin, the country’s eighteenth Surgeon General, was the event’s keynote speaker and took time to meet with Beaver students and course instructor Rosemary Martinelli, lecturer in communications at the campus.

Produced by the Entertainment Industries Council (EIC) in collaboration with Staunton Farm Foundation, the awards recognize accurate journalism coverage of mental health issues within television, radio, print, and online media in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The awards, presented at the Senator John Heinz History Center, recognize the impact of accurate media in changing attitudes and behaviors towards mental and behavioral health.

Benjamin’s keynote address focused on the new National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and the importance of accurate dissemination of information to the public about suicide prevention. Benjamin led the federal effort to draft the new strategy.
More than 200 members of the media, as well as community leaders, attended the event. Other speakers included Senator Randy Vulakovich; Brian Dyak, president and CEO, EIC; Susan Brozek Scott, Pittsburgh Regional Director, EIC, and Joni Schwager, executive director, Staunton Farm Foundation.

EIC, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1983 by leaders of the entertainment industry to bring the power and influence of the industry to bear on communication about health and social issues.

The Staunton Farm Foundation is dedicated to supporting mental health treatment and service for children, teens, and adults suffering from mental disorder in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

In an effort to prepare members of the local workforce for job opportunities in the Marcellus and Utica shale industry, the Penn State Beaver Office of Continuing Education is offering a series of training programs in conjunction with the Shale Training and Education Center (ShaleTEC) at the Pennsylvania College of Technology (Penn College) in Williamsport.
ShaleTEC is a collaboration between Penn College and Penn State Extension designed to provide a wide variety of resources to the community, and the oil and gas industry.

The following courses will be held at the Regional Learning Alliance in Cranberry Township.

PEC Basic SafeGulf/SafeLand Orientation will be held 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24. The course is designed to take the place of multiple operator orientations and give each participant a general idea of life and safety issues in the oil and gas industry - upstream, downstream, onshore, or offshore. This course meets API RP 75 and API RP T-1 requirements and provides a basic, awareness-level understanding of certain general safety information that an employee should know before entering a company facility and while performing assigned work duties.

Shell Bluebook Orientation will be held 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25 and provides participants with an awareness of Shell's commitment to pursue the goal of no harm to people or the environment as well as the minimum expectations for working safely on a Shell location. It describes Shell's systematic approach in meeting and exceeding compliance with the law, identification and management of HSE risks, and respect for our local communities. This training also describes the Shell Golden Rules and Twelve Life-Saving Rules.

Hazard Recognition Plus (HRP) from Decision Point Associates will be offered 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25. The course goal is to help individuals prevent incidents by educating and coaching them on how to accurately recognize and manage hazards when planning, evaluating, and conducting jobs. The HRP Process is built on extensive research and used by more than a dozen multi-national companies in sixteen countries.

Student project could aid police in solving seven-year old murder

Nancy Paoletti, a senior communications major at Penn State Beaver, has completed a student project that could help area police solve the seven-year old murder of a 94-year old woman who was killed in a home invasion in Beaver County. Police have determined that Paoletti’s work may be helpful in continuing their work on the cold case.

Paoletti is a student in the television field production class taught by John Chapin, professor of communications, who requires students to complete a service learning project. Chapin and Paoletti partnered with police, the district attorney’s office, and first responders at the crime scene to create a video detailing the case.

The 46-minute video begins with an introduction by Beaver County Assistant Chief Detective Andrew Gall, then moves into the 911 call placed by the elderly woman when a person or persons entered her home. Police and medics who initially responded discuss their memories and immediate impressions at the crime scene. The video concludes with comments from Beaver County District Attorney Anthony Berosh who believes that the recollections and one-on-one interviews with those initially involved in solving the case could help with the ongoing investigation.

An article about the project recently appeared in the Beaver County Times (Beaver, PA) and can be viewed at http://www.timesonline.com/news/police_fire_courts/video-project-will-help-police-with-cold-cases/article_b8e5a71c-a767-5c68-95ca-f33b938147b6.html.

Catholic Newman Club raises funds for those in need

In December students in the Penn State Beaver Catholic Newman Club raised $496.27 to benefit Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through the Work of Human Hands sale. Sales were conducted in the Brodhead Bistro for a week prior to the holidays.

The Work of Human Hands program allows hosts to sell high quality, fairly traded handcrafts and gourmet food items from disadvantaged producers across the globe. The CRS Fair Trade network guarantees fair wages to disadvantaged artisans, farmers, and workers. It also provides the technical and financial assistance that many people desperately need but rarely get in a conventional trading system.

In addition, chances were sold for two original acrylic paintings by student John Lind and a variety of handmade crocheted items were sold with proceeds totaling $32.75 to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. Lind is a sophomore engineering major from Cranberry Township.

The winners of Lind’s painting were Nick DiPietrantonio, staff member in the Office of Physical Plant, and Gary Slifkey, Catholic campus minister.
